Library Acts of Culture – BalletX

It was just a typical Tuesday at the Chestnut Hill branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, when a group of ballet dancers from BalletX performed two excerpts from their recent shows, Slump by Joshua L. Peugh and Head in the Clouds by James Gregg. The dancers whizzed around book shelves and twirled between tables, surprising and delighting patrons of the library on February 19. The performance took place as a result of the Library Acts of Culture program, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Library Acts of Culture brings pop-up cultural performances to libraries in cities across the country and usually leaves audiences feeling pleasantly surprised. On February 19, the performers from BalletX visited three branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia: Nicetown-Tioga, Greater Olney, and Chestnut Hill. The video below shows the performance and has short interviews with some of the performers and a few audience members. Thanks to Canary Promotion for coordinating the performances and to Gustavo Garcia for shooting with me. Below the video are a few still images from the performance at the Nicetown-Tioga Branch.
