Hurricane Sandy Spares Philadelphia

1 Min Read

Even though Hurricane Sandy hit Philadelphia with some mighty winds, the damage here was nothing compared with the images I’m seeing from Atlantic City, New York City, and even Hoboken, New Jersey. Last I heard, 41,000 people in Philadelphia lost power, and neither the Delaware nor the Schuylkill Rivers flooded. As you can see in the photos below, the Wissahickon Creek did not flood either. We drove around Northwest Philadelphia late this morning to assess the damage. The photos below comprise the major damage we saw.

Mayor Nutter just announced that SEPTA would be resuming service around noon. We have to feel lucky here in Philadelphia: this storm took less of a toll on us than Hurricane Irene last year.

The video below is from Monday afternoon, as the outer bands of Hurricane Sandy reached Northwest Philadelphia. There were some pretty high winds, as you’ll see.
