The Navy Yard in South Philadelphia has become a hub for business and industry under the management of the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC). At 1,200 acres, The Navy Yard offers office space, green space, and a campus-like feel along the Delaware waterfront. 143 companies and 11,000 employees come to work at The Navy Yard each day. Well-known Philadelphia companies such as Tastykake, GlaxoSmithKline, the Philadelphia 76ers, Jefferson Health System, CBRE Inc., Liberty Property Trust, and Urban Outfitters all have offices in The Navy Yard. Employees who work in The Navy Yard, enjoy the food trucks, the dog park, the college campus feel, and its location on the Delaware River.
As part of its summer series of events, PIDC held its first ever Navy Yard 5K Race and Health Fair on June 11, 2014. The purpose was to help foster a community amongst the businesses that call The Navy Yard home and increase awareness about health. The race and health fair took place during lunchtime so that employees of all companies could attend. Nava Yoga, also located in The Navy Yard, led the runners in a pre-race stretch before some 400 runners took part in the 5K race. After the race, many runners visited the health fair, which included free massages from the Vincera Institute. PIDC gave out trophies for the winners of various age/sex groups and the Philadelphia 76ers sent a few cheerleaders to support the runners.
